Bow – 1. To cease from competition or resistance – submit, yield
In times past a physical bow was used by conquering warlords and kings to express domination over some one. When in the presence of a king or conqueror, enemies and subordinates were forced to bow before them. I am reminded of an old movie my sister loves, “The Last Dragon”, where Sho Nuff tried to force Leroy to bow before him and kiss his feet, and the shame the act entailed. Tradition has since watered this physical practice down, and while there are some who still practice this sign of subservience, for the most part it has come to have no meaning. While there is no shame in bowing before God, when we bow before Him in dance it should not be a meaningless motion. We bow before Him, because we yield to His Omnipotent Omniscience, acknowledging that He is always there, seeing all and knowing our next best move with a perfect plan for us. We stop competing with His will for our lives. We stop competing with one another. We acknowledge that He is the Masterful creator of all. He has gifted us with abilities to accomplish His good pleasure. No one better. No one worse. We are different because we are designed to be. Special and unique because He delighted in our being. So we bow. We bow down in recognition of the fact that we are not stronger nor more powerful than God.
